NCAA Season 92 Junior Basketball: Pre-season thoughts from the Mapua Red Robins and Mike Enriquez (part 1)

03, June, 2016

Friday,

7:30 p.m.

FilOil-Flying V Sports Center,

San Juan

As he walked along the dugouts of the FilOil-Flying V Sports Center on June 3, 2016, Mike Enriquez reflected and talked about his thoughts.

“My game is Ok naman. Iniisip namin kung paano mag improve ang team,” said Enriquez minutes after the Red Robins won over the Far Eastern University, 83-80, in the junior division of the 2016 FilOil-Flying V pre-season basketball tournament.

The team, which is once again coached by Randy Alcantara,  has been playing without three players who have graduated.

June04Mike

(Mike Enriquez)

And they are getting for war in the coming season 92 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) junior basketball wars, which will commence on June 27.

The team is feeling the absence of mainstays David Velvez,  Eugene Camillosa and Justine Serrano, who has since moved over to the Mapua Cardinals.

“Dami nawala kaya naging tagilid ang team. May mga pumalit na makakatulong,” observed Mike, who was last year’s Finals MVP in place of Ricci Rivero.

June04Will

(new Red Robin cager Will Gozum fights for the loose ball with FEU main man Jack Gloria)

Personally, Enriquez said his leadership on the court as a point guard,  and his shooting improved following their 79-85 loss to the Arellano University Braves in the second semifinal playoffs for a second finals slot.

Their win last June 3 allowed them to share the same 2-2 win-loss record, which they shared with the La Salle Greenhills.

June04Sherwin

(Battle of the bigs with Sherwin Concepcion (8) and FEU’s Jack Gloria).

They did not make it to the semifinals with the triple tie.

In that game, Romuel Junsay led with 20 points, but it was Enriquez who scored crucial points with his total of 7.

June04Junsay1

(FEU’s LJ Gonzales tries to dribble his way pasy Mapua’s Romuel Junsay).

On the Baby Tams’ side, Jack Gloria led with 17 points, and Jay Gonzales provided 16.

The Baby Tams were nursing a 79-78 lead in the final minute when Gonzalez scored one of  two free throws in the last 21.8 seconds.

June04Jasper (Mapua’s Jasper Salenga (11) and Warren Bonifacion (15) tries to screen a pass by FEU’s Rey Boc (12) to LJ Gonzales (14), with Mapua’s Eric Andaya (6) coming in position for a triple team).

FEU had a chance to keep the upperhand. But Royce Alforque’s five second violation on his inbound to Kenji Roman resulted in a turnover.

Enriquez got to score two winning charities with 4.5 seconds left off Roman’s foul.

Time ran out on FEU as Roman tried to score a triple.

NCAA Season 91: Arellano Braves, Carlo Abadeza and his teammates prevail over over SSC Staglets

24 July 2015,

Friday,

8 p.m.

FilOil-Flying V Arena,

San Juan

Carlo Abadeza was having a bad day last Friday, July 24.

The 6’4 forward of the Arellano University Braves was struggling with his rebounds

And so was Lars Sunga, another rebounder of the Braves.

July29Carlo

(Carlo Abadeza harasses  dribbling Staglet Kobe Canoy(in pink Nike shoes)).

But their situation did not keep the Braves from putting away the San Sebastian Staglets, 82-64, in their evening encounter at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

“Nahirapan ako sa mga big ng Baste. Mabibigat,” said Abadeza after the Braves posted their fourth win in five outings in the 91st National Collegiate Athletic Association junior basketball tournament.

  • Arellano Braves 82, San Sebastian Staglets 64

Normally, Abadeza would average 14.2 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and 1.2 blocks.

July29Guilmer

(Arellano ace Guilmer de la Torre tries to get past Staglet Niko Sisa).

“Struggle ako sa rebounds. Pero nila ko pa rin ang game ko. Hindi ko na lang pinabayaan ma-frustrate ako,” said the 18-year transferee from La Salle Greenhills.

Abadeza finished the 30 minutes that he was on the floor with 12 points and nine rebounds.

He provided big support to top scorer Guilmer de la Torre, who led with 15 points and five rebounds.

July29Ira

(Ira Bataller shoots a free throw while Staglet Niko Sisa watches).

Overall, four key members of the Braves, including de la Torre, Lars Sunga and Ira Bataller were struggling with their game that day.

But, determination, team effort and support from other teammates allowed the Braves to hang on to second place, sharing the same 4-1 win-loss record with the Mapua Red Robins.

The Staglets stayed close in the second period, 14-18, off baskets from Nikko Sisa and JoeVance Agbong when things turned around.

July29Marlon

(Jovito Tamayo (left) gets screened by Staglet Patrick Daabay).

Jovito Tamayo hit one of two triples during the last five minutes of the second half, and this provided enough to build up a 37-22 halftime lead.

De la Torre hit one of his two treys in the last 8:55 of the third period, allowing the Braves to grab a 14-point spread, 40-26.

Bataller added another one in the 3:13 of the third, and the Braves got a 17-point, 53-36 spread from that.

July29Nino

(Point guard Nino Tamayo signals a play to teammates, while Staglet Marcus Arellano moves into a defensive position).

Varsity Sports Updates (NCAA Season 90 Game Day Review)- When Aljur Abrenica visits the NCAA Season 90 Junior Basketball wars; The JRU Light Bombers get relentless

12, September, 2014,

Friday,

8 p.m.,

Filoil-Flying V Arena,

San Juan

There was something different about the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers, two weeks ago, Friday, September 12.

The presence of actor Aljur Abrenica at the upper box during their game against the Arellano University Braves was a sight to behold.

As so was their fighting heart as the JRU Light Bombers weathered a close game with the  Braves and won 70-68.

Sept12Aljur

(Aljur Abrenica (in white shirt) watches the game of the JRU Light Bombers and the Arellano University Braves. He is in between members of the Dada family).

Mark de la Virgen’s drive off Karl Cabahug ensured the win in the last 6.4 seconds.

And so did a steal by Patrick Anonuevo on Juniel Balbarona after receiving an inbound pass from Guilmer de la Torre as the clock winded down.

Aljur, who recently opted out of a contract with GMA-7 as one of its talents, watched the action with Jowee Dada, the father of one of the key players of the Light Bombers.

Sept12Dada

(Andrei Dada grabs the loose ball during a possession battle with Arellano Braves Jason Strait(left)).

Jowee, who is now working as a production assistant for Aljur and his outfit (now that he has decided to go independent), was there with his boss, who obliged himself to selfies with fans and team supporters alike at halftime.

His son Andrei gave them a heck of  performance during the 31 minutes he saw action, with 21 gamehigh points.

Coach Nathaniel Gregorio told the boys that their performance in the second round is impossible to duplicate, with many teams leveling upon their own performance as well.

Sept12Estrella

(Daruious Estrella (19)in a loose ball scramble with Jason Strait).

In this game, the boys showed their fighting hearts.

“The boys did not give up. They were aggressive and relentless in their defense and rebounding,” remarked Gregorio.

After the Light Bombers obliged a visit and a photo op from Aljur at the dugout, the 17-year old de la Virgen emerged said that everything went fine, and according to how their coach wanted things to happen.

Sept12Maiko

(Arellano Braves cager John Peralta (16) harasses Mark de la Virgen).

“Galing sa pick and roll iyung shot ko. Una, nag-hesitate ako, tapos, saka ako nag drive. Pero di ako na-foul nung bantay ko,” said de la Virgen.

On the other hand, Anonuevo went home in a free-spirited mood and talked happily about his game, and after only two points that evening.

“Tsamba lang iyun. Hindi ko expected na makuha iyung bola nung nag-fumble siya,” said the five-foot-eight Anonuevo.

Sept12Mark

(John Zamora (8) fights for possession with Mark de la Virgen (7)).

The Light Bombers are now close to a Final Four seat, and they could get it if they hurdle La Salle Greenhills on Wednesday.

Looks like the Letran Squires are turning into a very dangerous team in the ongoing season 90 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) junior basketball wars.

There was something about the Squires when they prevailed in their confrontation with the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers, 47-39, last Friday, August 22.

I caught a glimpse of their battle, when I arrived at the FilOil-Flying V Arena earlier than usual.Letran

Aug24Dungan

(Letran’s Klyve Dungan (4) tries to dribble his way past JRU’s King Astrero(left)).

It sent shivers up my spine when I realized that their performance that day made them look as scary as the defending champion San Beda Red Cubs were last season.

They showed how deep their bench was in the final two minutes of a low-scoring ballgame.

As the Light Bombers were held scoreless in the last three minutes, the Squires scored from all angles.

Aug24Gedaria

(Tommy Gedaria in action).

Baskets by Jerus Ramirez, Jerrick Balanza and Tommy Gedaria in to those final moments allowed the Squires to stretch their winning run to six.

Their series of baskets came after Andrei Dada drove in with 4:23 left to deliver for JRU what turned out to be their final  last basket, 39-40.

In the ensuing play,  the Squires’ switching defense clicked and they successfully shut down  JRU’s prolific gunner Mark de la Virgen.

Aug24Ramirez

(Jeruz Ramirez is poised to shoot a free throw).

They started moving away, first off a split charity from Ramirez, 41-39, with 1:27 to go.

The Squires then forced two turnovers, with Gedaria sneaking up behind King Astrero in the second one, and while he was looking for an open man.

Gedaria stole off Astrero and passed on to Balanza, who sank a putback with 1:04 left.

P112083Aug24Gonzales

(Joshua Gonzales (5) wins a possession battle with JRU’s Patrick Anonuevo(6).

As they widened their lead, 43-39, Gedaria struck on the next turnover, with his triple in the last 39.2 seconds putting the Squires beyond the Light Bombers’ reach.

The Squires were doing poorly with their three-point shots all evening, and making only three out of 21 attempts  in their game against JRU proved to be a blessing.

-Significance of the win

The Squires have bounced back from a 48-70 crushing from the Red Cubs at the end of the first round.

That setback came after they posted seven straight victories.

They share the lead with the San Red Cubs with their 8-2 win-loss record.

The Light Bombers dropped to second, sharing the same 7-3 card with the Mapua Red Robins

Coach Junjie Ablan said the win will help restore the confidence of the team.

“We had a good run in the first round. We had seven straight wins. Sabi ko sa kanila, iyung talo namin sa San Beda, hindi pa katapusan iyun,” stated Ablan.

The Squires hope to build another streak of victories, and try to outdo themselves with, possibly, an eight-game win run in the second round.

The scores:

Letran 47- Dungan 9, Gonzales 9, Balanza 9, Ramirez 7, Rubite 5, Magsino 4, Gedaria 2, David 2, Caunan 0, Bernardo 0, Villasis 0.

JRU 39- Estrella 16, Astrero 8, Dada 6, Agustin 4, de la Virgen 3, Anonuevo 1, Anore 1, Rodas 0, Ross 0.

Quarterscores: 9-8, 19-18, 31-32, 47-39.

Varsity Sports Updates (NCAA Season 90 Game Day Review)- LSGH Greenies post “ugly” win, Arellano Brave put up gallant stand

It was an ugly win for the La Salle Greenhills Greenies.

I am not used to watching closely-fought games in the junior division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament.

But, this year, a lot of games in NCAA season 90 junior action are being fought this way.

P1110363

(Greenies John Gob (12) gets the ball during a loose ball scramble)

Many tears are being shed, while many bones and muscles getting broken or sprained.

A lot of coaches get angry over the outcome of the games that they get involved in.

And Friday’s night’s encounter between the Greenies and the Arellano University Braves are among those that are close.

P1110316

(LSGH Greenie Amando San Juan in the act of shooting a free throw).

But, despite a game which some quarters think is ugly, somebody still stood out.

-LSGH Greenies 60, Arellano University Braves 59; Gobs gives out best

Big man John Gob came up with a double-double performance for the La Salle Greenhills Greenies as they held back the Arellano University Braves, 60-59, Friday night, July 8 at the Arena in San Juan.

He was stepping in the absence of scoring ace Michael de la Cruz, who is in Dubai with Kobe Paras and the rest of the national under-17 team, which is seeing action in the 2014 FIBA World under-17 championships.

The six-foot Gob led with 22 points and 19 rebounds for the Greenies as they picked up their fourth win in eight games, and with still a game left in their first round assignment.

Gob’s big performance makes him one of the performing junior cagers after eight games in the season, and with his averages of 15.25 points and 17.25 rebounds.

His big game came as the Greenies finished the game leading by a point, and to the disappointment of coach John Flores.

After all, Gob, who says the team have done better against the Braves,  made his highest field goal output for the season, which is nine out of 16 attempts.

His field goal output for the evening is the fourth highest  since the start of the season.

San Beda Red Cub cager Evan Furaque has the highest overall, so far, with 12, which he made on June 29, when the Red Cubs took a 74-76 upset to the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers.

-Guilmer de la Torre, John Zamora  spoils it all

The Greenies were supposed move ahead in the last period.

But, Guilmer de la Torre spoiled everything for them, at least before he left the game on an injured left shoulder.

P1110375

(Arellano Braves cager Guilmer de la Torre (11) getting chased by Greenies (7) Rafael Salonga and San Juan (18) right after his steal off John Gob. He just hurt his left shoulder in this piece action)- photo I took and shared with Guilmer de la Torre on his Facebook page

Showing the way for the Braves with an above-par tally of 24 points, de la Torre forced a 44-all deadlock in the last 9:54 with his split charity.

He was able to force another, 46-all in the last 8:01, following a steal and drive off Amando San Juan.

De la Torre, who norms 17.44 points per game, was never the same afterwards, as his steal from San Juan, apparently hurt his left shoulder, and he had to be momentarily led out of the court by medics for first aid.

P1110376

(Guilmer de la Torre is attended by a medic. He feels pain on his left shoulder after snatching the ball away from Gob a few second back)-photo I took and shared with Guilmer de la Torre on his Facebook page

Eventually, the Greenies moved away, 53-48, behind attacks from San Juan and a split charity from Alain Madrigal in the last 3:16.

They then enjoyed a six-point edge, 54-48, on a split by Rafael Salonga.

Things could have gotten better for the Greenies, but the Braves continues to push with incursions from John Zamora and Juniel Balbarona allowing the Legarda-based dribblers to stay close, 54-56, in the final 1:01.

P1110379

(Guilmer de la Torre (11) temporarily sidelined as medics look into his shoulder)- photo I took and shared with Guilmer de la Torre on his Facebook page

Hitting four of six charities in the last 7.1 seconds enabled the Greenies to remain ahead, 60-56, and with Salonga making two of them near the end.

What got coach Flores really pissed off was when Zamora was able to get away with a triple as the buzzer sounded, and the Greenies won by a mere one-point advantage over the Chiefs.

“Wala. Hindi kami lumaro nang maayos. Wala sa focus. Wala kami lahat. Tsamba lang ang panalong ito,” said angry Flores with fire in his eyes, and  before he stomped off to the dugout.

  • The significance of the win

Their latest victory comes a week after the Greenies pulled off a 71-52 demolition of the Lyceum Philippines University Junior Pirates.

With the end of the first round just around the corner, the Greenies climbed to a share of third with the San Sebastian Staglets

Being finalists last year, the victory  means a lot for the Greenies, who were finalists last year.

Because this will keep them within reach of a Final Four seat going into the second round.

The Braves, on the other hand, fell behind in lone fourth at 4-5.

P1110383

(Guilmer de la Torres getting help for his recovery)-photo I took and shared with Guilmer de la Torre on his Facebook page

Hopefully, de la Torre will be back in action, and asks for everyone’s prayers. He says he was still in pain a day after their game,  and as he tells me on Facebook chat.

It’s crowded up there.

Coach Nathaniel Gregorio felt and saw the situation the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers are in.

This was after Typhoon Glenda came and devastated the rest of the country, when it was over, everyone realized that it’s now a level playing field in the junior basketball scene.

The JRU Light Bombers are now in this situation after they bowed to the Letran Squires, 50-65, last July 14, Monday, in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) junior basketball tournament at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

And this was fully realized after they bounced back , last Friday, July 18(two after Typhoon Glenda), with a 64-61 triumph over the Lyceum Philippines University Junior Pirates.

“Naging struggle ang pagkatalo naming sa Letran. Sabi ko sa kanila nung nakaraan, that we can lose our focus in defense. Malaki ang epekto sa kanila,” said Gregorio after the team sang their school anthem.

After getting past the Junior Pirates, a three-way tie for the lead has resulted.

The Light Bombers now share the top spot with the Squires and the defending champion San Beda Red Cubs.

-JRU LIGHT BOMBERS 64, LPU JUNIOR PIRATES 61

Mark de la Virgen, known for his big heart, saved the day for the Light Bombers.

Making 21 points throughout the 30 minutes he played, de la Virgen banged in four free throws in the dying seconds.

P1070052

(Mark de la Virgen shoots his charities).

His two charities in the last 21.3 seconds, and two more in the final two seconds, came on fouls committed by Generoso Cecilio.

They lifted the Light Bombers to their 64-61 stopping of the Junior Pirates.

Because of this, they earned their third win in four games.

This put them in a share of the lead with the Letran Squires, as both now have the same 3-1 win-loss slates.

The Junior Pirates, who are still winless after five outings, gave JRU a scare when they Makki Santos struck with a putback in the last 25.9 seconds, 58-60.

-SCARY THIRD QUARTER

It was kinda hairy for the Light Bombers in the closing minutes of the third.

Behind, 36-39, Lyceum unleashed an 8-0 blast behind John Menil, Chester Jungco and Miguel Lagman in the final minute of the third.

Sportswriter’s notebook- April Fool’s Day: Will this be the day for new UE Red Warriors coach?

March 28, 2014,

Friday,

3 p.m.,

Rizal Memorial Sports Complex,

Vito Cruz,

Manila

April 1 is April Fool’s Day.

On this day, many pranks will most likely happen.

But, not for Segundo “Bong” de la Cruz III, Leo Austria and, probably not for whoever gets appointed as the new head of the UE Red Warriors.

For coach Bong, this is when interim coach Estong Ballesteros’ contract with the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers end, he officialy assumes his post.

For Leo Austria, this is the day that he will formally tackle his job with the Sports Development office of the Ateneo de Manila University.

As for the UE Red Warrior, this will mostly be the start of the month of changes for the roster, and how they will tackle season 77 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines.

School officials are looking for a  new coach.

This is because they just fired David “Boycie” Zamar.

UE coach Boyzie Zamar

(former coach David “Boycie” Zamar- photo sourced from Pinoyexchange.com).

Top university officials just made the decision to do so, according to team manager Carmelita Mateo in a statement which I got from a Facebook message coming from the UE external relations office.

They felt that Zamar was not committed enough to handle the Warriors this season.

“We feel that the coach must be the one who will handle the team full time,” said Mateo, who hinted that a new coach will be named in the coming week.

Zamar  has recently moved on from being one of the assistant coaches of San Miguel to Barangay Ginebra in the PBA.

Two years ago, he took over  from Jerry Codiñera as head coach on an interim basis, and it happened midway in the 75th season.

Officials said they have yet to name their choices for coach.

The Living Legend Roberto “Sonny” Jaworski, already considered to be a commissioner is amongst the top choices if sources are to be believed.

But the other possible choices reportedly include Jimmy Mariano, Nat Canson, Luis Palaganas and Derrick Pumaren.

Then, there’s Derrick’s brother Dindo Pumaren.

There’s former Letran coach Louie Alas and  former UE coach Lawrence Chongson.

UE athletics chief Rodrigo Roque is tight-lipped about this, and said the top management will have a final say.

Under Zamar last season, the Red Warriors managed to finish sixth, and tied with the Ateneo Blue Eagles with the same 7-7 win-loss record.

Two seasons ago, they were tied in seventh with the Adamson Falcons, wielding a 3-11 slate.

Whatever happens to the UE Red Warriors on April 1, April Fool’s Day, is no joke to me.
