It was the Brigadiers’ first win in seven games, and after a year since they last met the Brigadiers.

“It’s been a long while since our last win. Teamwork and practice did it for us,” said Brigadiers coach Ariel Sison at the end of their junior division encounter in the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball tournament last Monday (July 29) at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The five-foot-nine Aguilar, a transferee from Arellano University High School,  poured in nine points in the first canto as the Brigadiers pulled away with a 27-7 first quarter advantage.

“Para sa akin, ito na ang best game. Nagtulung-tulong po kaming lahat,” said Aguilar, who is on his final year with the team.

Aguilar exploded with 10 points in the third period as the Brigadiers went on to grab a 21-point edge, 66-45.

Varsity Sports Updates (NCAA Men’s Basketball Results) – Red Lions weathers tough Altas, JRU wins(Part 1)

July 27, 2013

Saturday

FilOil-Flying V Arena

San Juan

6 :30 p.m.

It was supposed to be a rout.

But, the University of Perpetual Help Altas proved to be a very scary team and a squad which should not be taken lightly in the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball tournament.

The defending champion San Beda Red Lions found out how fearsome the Altas were last night (Saturday, July 27) when they lost 24-point lead late in the second quarter, and struggled to a 72-65 win at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

They were ready for the Altas’ zone defense, but the Red Lions were outfoxed by Altas coach Aric del Rosario and  his bag of tricks.

In the end, a triple from top scorer Baser Amer, two charities from Rome de la Rosa and a putback from Arthur de la Cruz became the Red Lions’ saving grace.

Their baskets lifted the Red Lions to their fifth straight win, and put them in solo second with their 6-1 win-loss record.

Coach Boyet Fernandez was shaken by the experience, that he refused to reveal how the Altas were able to solve the riddle of their running game, and how the Red Lions adjusted.

But, the multi-titled Aric del Rosario, who has more championship experience than coach Boyet,  unconditionally shared a few tips on how they were able to keep Red Lions from finishing them off with a rout.

“Depensa. Sa tao-tao. Combination kasi ang ginawa naming depensa. Tao-tao na biglang magso-zone. So, pagka-ganoon, iigsi ang shot clock nila (Red Lions) eh. So, magma-madali.Kaya nakahabol kami,” said del Rosario after the game at the dugout.

Amer banged in 23 points for the Red Lions, including eight points in the first period as they moved away 20-10, and eventually took their biggest edge, 36-12 in the last two minutes of the second canto.

-Play by play

Unfazed by the Red Lions’ big advantage, del Rosario slowly picked their way out of their dilemma afterwards.

And two triples from Harold Arboleda and Mark Bitoy towards the end of the half was just the start as the Altas launched a short 10-2 run which SBC’s edge to 16, 22-38, at halftime.

In the second half, the Altas were no longer focused on their zone defense.

With their man-zone defense forcing the Red Lions to quick and sometimes inaccurate baskets, and around five turnovers, the Altas were able to move within reach by 13, at the end of the third period.

Cameroonian Nosa Omorogbe, who led the Altas with 21 points and five boards, converted three of charity shots which UPHDS scored in the last 12.7 seconds.

This allowed the Altas to close the gap, 39-52.(to be continued)

Varsity Sports Updates (NCAA Senior Basketball results)- Letran Knights honor Dysam with huge win

July 26, 2013

6 a.m.

Thursday

FilOil-Flying V Arena, San Juan

-Honoring the fallen(within something done in an unspoken way)

Mark Cruz had this piercing look in his eyes after the game last night (Thursday, July 25).

I could see that he was happy and satisfied, when I followed him out of the media center, and asked him about the white elastic tape wrapped around  his left wrist is all about.

“Para kay Franz ito,” said Cruz, who showed me the letterings on the tape. The word  Franz and the number  4 was written around it.

As we parted way, I knew that the Letran Knights’ latest victory was very meaningful for members of the team,

And this, I believe, the team never told coach Caloy Garcia that they would do this.

They never spoke to him how they would honor Franz Dysam  during the game, since I believe, coach Caloy, is still an outsider to the heart and soul, and the young minds of the Letran Knights current roster.

The level of closeness, and unspoken understanding, I believe is just confined to the  members of the team .

It is this unspoken understanding with the team which coach Caloy has not yet penetrated at a deeper level.

I remember asking him this question two days ago: Will the guys wear anything to symbolize their grief, angst, etc.?

He said,”not that I know of. Ayaw nang pag-usapan iyung nangyari. We’re just thankful that he had a successful operation.”

-Letran 67, Arellano University 57

There were many ways to honor a fallen teammate.

The five-foot-five Cruz did this by scoring better than his previous game, hitting 25 points, and three rebounds and three assists as he led the Letran Knights to a 67-57 demolition of the Arellano University Chiefs.

“Gusto naming mag-contribute. Kaya nag-stepup kaming lahat. And this game is for Franz(Dysam),” remarked Cruz as the Knights soared to their sixth straight win and stayed in the solo lead of the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball tournament.

The Knights just  ran and ran from start to finish.

With their boundless energy and emotions still high, they went on and on, until the Chiefs simply got tired of trying to catch with them.

The Chiefs could only catch up with  Letran until halftime, and trail by a point, 34-33.

After that, the Knights  began moving ahead effortlessly, and took a 42-35 edge off a triple from Rey Nambatac, who tallied nine points.

Cruz, who had five triples, later handed the Knights an 11-point spread, 51-40 with 2:38 left.

“Mark shot the lights out today, and by shooting 50 percent from the threes and 56 percent from the field,” said  Garcia, who seemed clueless about the wristbands.

Cruz delievered 12 points in the third period, and as the Knights took a 53-42 lead before the start of the fourth.

“Malaking bagay sa amin iyan. Kasi, nabuksan ang lane,” added Garcia.

Dysam is still recovering from gunshot wounds when he and his girlfriend Joanne Sordan were ambushed last Saturday after their game against the Lyceum Pirates. Sordan perished from the incident.

Kevin Racal tallied 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Knights while slotman Raymund Almazan made seven points and had 17 boards.

The Chiefs, who fell behind at 2-4, got 10 points from Donald Gamaru.

The Knights, the fans and spectators had a moment of silence before the start of the game, and it was done in honor of Sordan and  Dysam, who won’t be able to play with the team even after he recovers from his wounds.

The scores:

Letran 67- Cruz 25, Racal 14, Nambatac 9, Almazan 7, Gabawan 4, Castro 2, Ruaya 2, Tambeling 2, Belorio 2,

Arellano 57- Gumaru 10, Nicholls 9, Hernandez 8, Pinto 7, Salcedo 5, Enriquez 4, Jalalon 2, Agovida 2, Margallo 2.

Quarterscores: 22-16, 34-33, 53-42, 67-57.

Varsity Sports Updates (Conversations with Letran coach Caloy Garcia on the Knights’ coming game, the Franz Dysam incident and flashbacks to the Paolo Orbeta case)

July 23, 2013

SM Mall of Asia IMAX Theatre lounge

Pasay City

Its 15 minutes before the last full show of the science fiction/action movie, Pacific Rim.

Me and my wife are cooling down at a lounge seat in the SM MOA IMAX lobby.

We have spent two hours going in and out of computer stores, undecided if I will get her an Ipad 2, Ipad 4, Ipad mini, an Asus Sonic Master Icore3, or an HP Pavilion Icore3.

But, one thing is for sure. We will watch the 3D version of Pacific Rim.

While waiting it out, I fiddle through my notes on the Letran Knights.

Out of respect for privacy, and because I felt that any calls to any members of the team may not be entertained while they sort out their emotions over what happened to Franz Dysam, I decided not to get in touch with the team over the last two days.

I finally get the courage to text coach Caloy Garcia. I was not disappointed by the response that he will welcome my call.

-Coach Caloy: on their game vs Arellano Chiefs and Franz Dysam

(Photo of coach Caloy Garcia sourced from Cons Reyes’upload on http://www.kristin.com).

I ask coach Caloy how the team is, and how he sizes up the Arellano University Chiefs.

He says.”OK naman, nakapag-ensayo na at nakapg-praktis na ang team. Medyo malungkot nga lang.”

Will the guys wear anything to symbolize their grief, angst, etc.?

He says,”not that I know of. Ayaw nang pag-usapan iyung nangyari. We’re just thankful that he had a successful operation.”

…about your game with Arellano?

He says, “Arellano is a very strong team. May mga malalaki, may magaling na point, may shooters.”

How about the team?

“We are ready to get win. So long as we don’t commit too many errors, and turn the ball over too much.

We don’t have a backup point guard na veteran. Our adjustment without Franz Dysam is that McJour Luib and Rey Nambatac will alternate at his position.

He added that Franz Dysam will not be able to recover in time to play in the remaining games of the Knights this season.

The extent of Dysam’s injuries calls for him to have a long period of rest.

“Tapos na rin ang playing years niya,” added Garcia.

-Flashback: Aug. 2, 2007

Coach Caloy is no stranger to bad incidents involving any team he handles.

I recall the day when coach Caloy  was still handling the College of St. Benilde Blazers. At 4 p.m. in the afternoon, on Aug. 2, 2007, I gave him a call, and was surprised to learn that his point guard Paolo Orbeta is in trouble.

I wrote a story  that day, and it was published the following day in Manila Standard-Today.

I wrote that the starting point guard of the College of St. Benilde Blazers

will no longer be allowed to play for his school after he and three other suspects were arrested earlier in the morning  on charges of illegal gambling by agents of

the National Bureau of Investigation.

Orbeta was caught during an entrapment operation.

The news of Paolo Orbeta’s arrest came  shock to coach Caloy, who told me that  his top player will no longer be allowed see action for the rest of

83rd season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball tournament.

According to a statement released by the NBI, Orbeta was allegedly caught in the act of receiving marked money from complainant Wilfred Uy.

The sting operation happened  when NBI agents swooped down at Ate Em`s eatery in Agno St. in Malate, Manila.

Those were caught with Orbeta by agents belonging to the NBI’s Anti-Fraud and Computer Crimes Division were schoolmate James Ryan Mangaran, Rajan Chandumal (aka,Howard Gan), and Police Inspector Aaron Elago.

Another player, Luis Guingon, who belonged the Blazers’ Team B, remained at large when they were apprehended.

“Nakaka-shock. He was my best player. And we have

been losing games,” said Garcia, at that time, and I recalled my story from my archives.

Coach Caloy, at the time, revealed that he was surprised to find out that Orbeta did not show up for practice on Thursday morning.

Orbeta had been missing practices over the last two days.

In the story I wrote, I recalled having said that, “according to a report submitted by NBI agent Vicente de Guzman III, Uy was approached by Orbeta sometime last March, along with Guingon to borrow P300,000 due

to their loss to bets in the games of the National Basketball Association.”

Varsity Sports Updates (NCAA Junior Basketball results)- Gumtang shines as Red Cubs wins, Letran Squires prevail

July 20, 2013

Saturday

4 p.m.

FilOil-Flying v Arena

San Juan

– San Beda Red Cubs 90, JRU Light Bombers 54

With Ranbill Tongco momentarily out of action, reserve player John Gumtang stepped up, and came up with his best game ever.

The six-foot-one Gumtang delivered 20 points and seven rebounds, his best in six games as the defending champion San Beda Red Cubs trounced the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers, 90-54, last Saturday (July 20) in the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) junior basketball tournament.

It was his best showing after he made 15 points when the Red Cubs whipped the Mapua Red Robins, 83-61, last July 15.

“Coach (JB Sison) told me to be ready, and work hard with my game,” said Gumtang after Tongco sprained his ankle during practice last Friday.

The Red Cubs went on to post their sixth straight win to share the lead with the San Sebastian Staglets.

Tongco is the third player who is missing games with Red Cubs, with Norrish Decapia having just returned from a stint with the Philippine youth team in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association under-16 championships in Yogyakarta.

Nikko Abatayo has already missed three games because of chicken pox.

Arvin Tolentino had 14 points and 11 rebounds.

He unloaded nine points in the first period as the Red Cubs took charge with a 19-8 advantage in the first quarter.

The Light Bombers, with Mico Pallares leading with 12 points, managed to take charge under the boards in the second quarter.

But poor field goal shooting allowed the Red Cubs to get away with a 40-24 halftime advantage.

“Nung una, JRU was controlling the rebounds. But, they were missing their shots, and they were not able to capitalize on their ability to control the boards,” said Red Cubs coach JB Sison.

JRU is now in second at 4-2.

-Letran 71, Lyceum 62

Earlier, John Alacre hit 27 points and nine rebound for the Letran Squires, who edged the Lyceum Junior Pirates, 71-62.

The Squires picked up their second win in five games, and they improved their record in seventh spot.

-The scores:

First game:

Varsity Sports Updates- Official statement on shooting incident involving Franz Dysam (Part 2)

July 22, 2013

7:30 p.m.

Monday

FilOil-Flying V Arena

Fr. Vic Calvo of Letran enters the press room at the halftime break of the game between the University of the Perpetual Help Altas and the Mapua Cardinals.

Since the incident  began, Fr. Vic has been on the move, and has been confiding with many people involved.

National Collegiate Athletic Association mancom chairman Dax Castellano of season 89 host College of St. Benilde was also around.

-Fr. Vic’s statement

Just awhile ago, the surgical operation of  Franz (Dysam) to extract the four bullet slugs from his body (he had six wounds caused by a .45 calibre pistol), was successful.

Right now, he is resting at the hospital.

(Is there a timetable for his recovery): depende, if no bone was affected, and his lungs was not hit. He can be back in action within a month.

“Mga one month, puede. I saw the x-rays of his wounds. Parang iyung mga bala umiiwas sa mga buto niya eh. Napaka-suwerte. As for his major organs, malapit na lang pero hindi tumama.”

Kasama siya sa rotation. We are praying for his full recovery.

(How is the team?)- after the game, hindi na nakakain nang maayos. Kasi dahil. Kasi, siyempre,  sa nangyari. Dapat happy kayo dahil nanalo. Pero, instead of going to the dinner…

Pero, during the dinner, kinuwento sa akin. Hindi makakain. Iyung iba, di makatulog eh. Alas-3, alas 5 gising pa ako eh.

Kasi kasama mo lang kanina iyung girlfriend niya. Nanduon sa  likod ng bench. Tapos biglang nawala. Tapos, iyung mga players, parang nasa isip nila.

Parang ganoon na lang ba. Mabilis iyung buhay. So traumatic talaga iyung experience dun.(to be continued).

Varsity Sports Updates- Official statement on shooting incident involving Franz Dysam

July 2, 2013

Sunday

Pasay City

11 a.m.

As I got back from self-imposed evening break to attend to spiritual and marital matters, I was  jolted by Twitter messages which discussed the shooting incident involving Franz Dysam last night.

The incident happened more than an hour after the Letran Knights won over the Lyceum Philippines University Pirates, 61-53, in the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball tournament at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Since this morning, Letran athletic moderator Fr. Vic Calvo gave me call, and updated me on what happened.

Just an hour after I woke up, and after breakfast, I  already had a  story which I quickly wrote and emailed to my office.

This afternoon, as I covered the Super Liga, more updates from the Letran community followed.

The following is the official statement of Colegio San Juan de Letran, through Fr. Vic Calvo, OP.:

–         Dysam safe, in stable condition

Franz Dysam is now in stable condition after he was shot by riding in tandem near the corner of N. Domingo and Araneta Avenue, yesterday.

Medical results show that all his vital signs are in good condition. He is scheduled for operation tomorrow to remove four bullets in his body.

Letran administrators decided not to disclose the hospital where he is in for security reasons. Two police officers and Letran personal security were already deployed to ensure his safety. Franz mother already arrived from Cebu.

Franz is conscious and is already aware of the passing of his girlfriend, Joanne Sordan. Like a gallant knight, Franz protected his girlfriend during the incident that got him six gun shot wounds. While only one shot was received by his girlfriend, it was too fatal that she was declared DOA by the hospital where they were first brought. Their three-month old child is safe.

The investigation is still ongoing although there is already lead being looked by the investigators handling the  case. Said lead,  as advised by the investigation body, cannot be disclosed yet. The CCTV footage that captured the incident and to identify the gunmen was already with the police authorities.

The Letran community is behind Franz in his rally. All assistance,  including moral and spiritual, is given him. He is consistently being prayed for especially by the Letran priests.

Franz is thankful to all who are praying for him and his family, especially to the Letran community who never left him in this trying times.

Letran officials pray for the speedy recovery of Franz and wish for the fast resolution of the case. We also pray for the eternal repose of the soul of Joanne Sordan.

Varsity Sports Updates (NCAA Senior and Junior Basketball results)- All In A Day’s Work For Raymund Valenzona.

July 19, 2013

Friday

8:57 p.m.

Vito Cruz

Raymund Valenzona, the son of former San Sebastian College head coach  Raymund Valenzona is having a rare experience as coach of the San Sebastian Staglets in the junior division, and as assistant coach of the SSC Stags in the senior division of the  89th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament.

First, As head coach of the unbeaten San Sebastian Staglets, he was around as his wards  posted their fifth straight win in the  junior basketball tournament at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Second, he was still around when the San Sebastian Stags held off the winless College of St. Benilde Blazers in the senior division, some two hours later.

This situation will be like this  for Valenzona in their next games on Monday, and until Topex Robinson arrives from the United States on Wednesday next week.

–         SSC Staglets 62, LSGH Junior Blazers 56

The Staglets weathered late attempts by the La Salle Greenhills Junior Blazers to stage a rally.

But, they  eventually came away with  a 62-56 triumph over the Junior Blazers in a late afternoon game (Thursday, July 18) in the junior division

High school senior Ryan Costelo made 12 points,  and he sank five of nine charity attempts in the last 9.5 seconds.

Rhanzelle Yong backed him up with 10 points and 15 rebounds.

Costelo took the place of Lorenzo Navarro, who is in Indonesia with the national under-16 team with three others.

“We were able to adjust on our plays after they were able to cover our plays,” said Staglets coach Raymund Valenzona.

The 16-year old Costelo and his teammates hassled up on defense in the fourth period, and this put pressure on the Junior Blazers efforts to come back from 12 points down at the end of the third, 48-36.

He fired seven points in the last canto as the Staglets went on to finish with a 10-point advantage.

The Junior Blazers, who now have a 3-2 win-loss slate, got 26 points from Rasleigh Rivero.

They missed Kobe Paras, Richlee Rivero, Dino San Juan and Michael de la Cruz, who are with the  rest of the Philippine youth team in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association under-16 championships in Yogyakarta.

The scores:

SSC 62- Costelo 12, Yong 10, Gayosa 9, Calisaan 6, Loor 6, Gatdula 5, Beredo 5, Magno 4, Causon 3, Sera Josef 2,

LSGH 52- R. Rivero 26, Barrera 13, Ramilo 7, Gob 4, Abadeza 2.

Quarterscores: 18-14, 34-26, 48-36, 62-52.

–         SSC 80, CSB 78

Leo de Vera sank two charities in the last 31.5 seconds, and off Jonathan Grey’s foul, sending the San Sebastian Stags to an 80-78 victory over the College of St. Benilde Blazers.

His charities came seconds after Paulo Taha ran into Bradwyn Guinto while he was going for a drive, and turned the ball over.

De Vera’s two freebies shattered the game’s ninth deadlock, and handed the Stags their third triumph in five games.

This put the Stags in a share of third at 3-2 with the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers.

“Grabe ang pressure ng game na ito. Baka kasi sa amin makakuha ng unang panalo ang CSB,” said Valenzona, who took over from Robinson, who is in the US with the rest of the Alaska Milk team and coaching staff.

They are there to train and recruit players.

John Ortuoste topscored for the Stags with 23 points and six rebounds, while Jaymar Perez had 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Jovit de la Cruz made 12.

The Blazers, who have been in close games since the start of the season dropped to their fifth straight setback.

The scores:

The Altalettes climbed to third at 3-2.

They broke free from the game’s third deadlock which Steven Paulo forced with three-point play.

Shaq Imperial powered the Altalettes with 30 points and 12 rebounds.

Point guard Henri Subido, who could join the La Salle Green Archers next year,  achieved what could be a milestone in his young career.

He came up with his three-year best as the 17-year old Subido and his teammates helped the La Salle Junior Archers join the National University Bullpups in continuing  their run of victories in the 76th University Athletic Association of the Philippines Junior Basketball Tournament.

The two teams  have kept their share of the lead after they posted their fourth straight victories over separate rivals Wednesday (July 17) at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Their unbeaten records have made them top contenders for the Final Four semifinals this early in the season.

The 17-year old Subido, who made 11 points when he debuted for the Junior Archers in 2010, banged in a career high 28 points in leading the La Salle-Zobel to an 84-72 crushing of the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs.

Teammates Karl Maldinger and Alfonso Banzon also came up with great performances for the Junior Archers tried to score on every opportunity,  and as they tried to pick up the pace in the first quarter.

They were already ahead, 20-13 in the first quarter when the Tiger Cubs rallied and came close for the first and last time.

An 8-0 blast by Ryan Syyap, Paulo Corre and Aaron Reyes brought the Tiger Cubs to within a point, 20-19, at the end of the first period.

“It was a very intense game. So far, we pulled it off,” said the 5-foot-9 Subido, a high school senior who is being invited to joined the Green Archers next year, and still contemplating on his plans when the season is over.

The Tigers Cubs were limited to just nine points in the second canto.

It happened as the Junior Archers unleashed a 16-6 run in the last 1:42, and off triples from Karlo Abanilla and Aljun Melecio.

Their lead ballooned to 20, with 7:50 remaining in the fourth, 70-50, behind another big run which Subido and Maldinger concocted.

“I like our turnover and our fastbreaks. This is what we want to happen, to score on turnovers and fastbreaks because we are a small team. We want to capitalize on our speed,” said coach Boris Aldeguer when he looked at his copy of the stats sheet while at the dugout.

The Junior Archers made 23 points on fastbreak, and 23 more on turnovers.

Tongco said the University of Santo Tomas Tigers and the College of St. Benilde Blazers have shown interest in having them join them when he enters college next year.

But he is keeping his options open because the San Beda Red Lions are also opening their doors to him.

Gumtang and Franz Abuda took charge in the first quarter, combining for eight points as the Red Cubs moved away, 16-11.

Tongco’s turn came in the second quarter, and as he fired eight points to lead  the Red Cubs to a 43-21 halftime spread.
