Pasay City

At the moment, I hope this big headache I have does not lead to a flu. Got this after watching the College of St. Benilde Blazers’ winning game over the Mapua Cardinals.

While I try to recover(from my headache and the resulting writers’ block), here is my take on selected games of the the 76th University Athletic Association of the Philippines Junior Basketball tournament.

As of today (Sept. 7, 2013), four teams are in contention for the Final Four semifinals.

That’s the National University Bullpups, the Ateneo Blue Eaglets, the La Salle-Zobel Junior Archers and the defending champion Far Eastern University Baby Tamaraws.

–         Game day highlights Aug. 24, 2013

The Ateneo Blue Eaglets have improved their chances of making it to the Final Four semifinals of the 76th University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Junior Basketball Tournament.

They needed one big scoring run to put away the La Salle-Zobel Junior Archers, 64-54, on Aug. 24, Saturday at the Blue Eagle gym in Katipunan Ave., Quezon City.

Thirdy Ravena, Matthew and Michael Nieto played above their averages again for the Blue Eaglets.

Ravena struck with 21 points, while Matthew and Michael dished out 14 and 8.

The Junior Archers kept things tight until the end of the third quarter.

They took the upperhand for the last time off Alfonso Banzon’s split charity in the last three seconds, 43-44.

In the beginning of the last quarter, Michael and Matthew Nieto joined forces with Ravena for a big 17-6 scoring blast.

The Blue Eaglets lead then ballooned to 60-44, with 2:44 left.

The Bullpups got off to a great start that rainy afternoon, and just as monsoon rains brought by storm “Maring” were starting wreak havoc around the country  as well.

Cani banged in four points during a 12-0 spurt in the start of the first period.

He joined forces Michael Battad with nine points in the last 6:32.

The son of Angelito Cani, who happens to be an assistant coach for the de La Salle University-Dasmarinas Patriots, was then used sparingly in the following minutes.

Ahead at 16-4, the Bullpups unloaded a 14-0 blast behind Go, and handed the NU a 30-4 edge in the last 51 seconds.

Defense allowed the Junior Archers to score only 10 points in the second period.

They did this  with Mark Dyke protecting the boards with nine defensive boards out of an 18-rebound tally, and with Vincent Claveria and John Cauilan coming up with nine and seven rebounds.

Bullpup Michael Mosqueda kept an eye on Junior Archer scoring ace Henri Subido, who was scoreless in the first two quarters and finished with 11 points.

Point guard Henri Subido, who could join the La Salle Green Archers next year,  achieved what could be a milestone in his young career.

He came up with his three-year best as the 17-year old Subido and his teammates helped the La Salle Junior Archers join the National University Bullpups in continuing  their run of victories in the 76th University Athletic Association of the Philippines Junior Basketball Tournament.

The two teams  have kept their share of the lead after they posted their fourth straight victories over separate rivals Wednesday (July 17) at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Their unbeaten records have made them top contenders for the Final Four semifinals this early in the season.

The 17-year old Subido, who made 11 points when he debuted for the Junior Archers in 2010, banged in a career high 28 points in leading the La Salle-Zobel to an 84-72 crushing of the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs.

Teammates Karl Maldinger and Alfonso Banzon also came up with great performances for the Junior Archers tried to score on every opportunity,  and as they tried to pick up the pace in the first quarter.

They were already ahead, 20-13 in the first quarter when the Tiger Cubs rallied and came close for the first and last time.

An 8-0 blast by Ryan Syyap, Paulo Corre and Aaron Reyes brought the Tiger Cubs to within a point, 20-19, at the end of the first period.

“It was a very intense game. So far, we pulled it off,” said the 5-foot-9 Subido, a high school senior who is being invited to joined the Green Archers next year, and still contemplating on his plans when the season is over.

The Tigers Cubs were limited to just nine points in the second canto.

It happened as the Junior Archers unleashed a 16-6 run in the last 1:42, and off triples from Karlo Abanilla and Aljun Melecio.

This allowed the Junior Archers to gain a 10-point lead, 36-26.

“Coach Boris (Aldeguer) told us to be patient, move the ball around and look for the open man,” added Subido.

Combined efforts by Subido, Banzon and Maldinger in the early part of the third period allowed La Salle-Zobel to post a 16-point advantage, 44-28, with 7:36 left.

Their lead ballooned to 20, with 7:50 remaining in the fourth, 70-50, behind another big run which Subido and Maldinger concocted.

“I like our turnover and our fastbreaks. This is what we want to happen, to score on turnovers and fastbreaks because we are a small team. We want to capitalize on our speed,” said coach Boris Aldeguer when he looked at his copy of the stats sheet while at the dugout.

The Junior Archers made 23 points on fastbreak, and 23 more on turnovers.

Corre led the Tigers Cubs with 22 points while Reyes had 18 points and 16 boards, and Thristan Laman made 13.

UST, with teammate Randolf Marcelo celebrating his 16th birthday, stayed in second position with its 2-2 win-loss record.

On the other hand, the Junior Archers missed teammate Alfred Sajulga, who is serving a one-game suspension.

Sajulga incurred his second flagrant foul in their game with the Far Eastern University Baby Tamaraws.

-NU 76, UE 55

Six foot-three high school junior Mark Dyke  and four other teammates unloaded double digit figures in carrying the NU Bullpups to a 76-55 smothering of the undermanned University of the East Junior Warriors.

Dyke produced a double-double output of 13 points and 17 rebounds for the Bullpups, while Manuel Mosqueda and Carlos Lopena had 12 each, and the pair of Aldis Castillo and Hubert Cani chipped in 11.

July18Cani

The Junior Warriors played without main man Reymar Caduyac, who will miss the rest of the first round after he underwent surgery for appendicitis last week, according to coach Billy Reyes.

He relied on Mark del Rosario, Jonas Briones and Camillus Altamirano in Caduyac’s absence.

At the start, the Junior Warriors eagerly stayed within range, 15-18.

But the Bullpups slowly moved out of range, first off Lopena’s two charities and a layup from Castillo which gave NU a 22-15 edge in the last 1:07.

Two free throws from Dyke in the last 5:45 of the second canto allowed the Bullpups to gain a 28-20 lead.

After the Junior Warriors threatened for the last 24-28, the Bulldogs launched  16-0 spurt behind Castillo’s trey, and they went on to end the first half with a 16-point edge, 40-24.

They gained a 20-point spread, 61-41, at the end of the third off Cani’s drive.

Dyke led a 6-0 run in the last 8:46 of the fourth to put NU up by 23, 66-43, in the last 8:46.
