Robi Nayve played 13 quality minutes for the defending champion San Beda Red Lions last Monday.
It was their opening game against the Letran Squires, who were giving them a hard time in the first two quarters.
He showed his best during a crucial stage in the second quarter.

And his efforts contributed big time in the Red Cubs’ 107-74 slamming of the Squires in the start of the 92nd National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Junior Basketball Tournament at the FilOil-Flying V Sports Center in San Juan.
“Napagkatiwalaan akong bigyan ng bola ng mga teammates ko. Ayun, konting sipag lang,” said the 16-year old Nayve.
The Squires, led by Jovito Tamayo with 16 points, were putting up one big fight in the first half.

They forced 11 lead changes before the Red Cubs finally took charge in the last 7:28 of the second period.
It was Nayve’s timely baskets which helped last year’s finals MVP Evan Nelle and Joshua Tagala which lifted the Red Cubs ahead and out of reach.
He came into the picture in the last 7:35.

At that time, Nelle and Tagala, who are among the big guns of the team, were coming from a restful point in their game.
His back-to-back baskets kept San Beda ahead by a points, 31-30.
When Tamayo answered with a drive in the final 6:19, Letran managed to stay ahead for a final time, 32-31.

Nelle put in a triple to move San Beda ahead, before Tamayo answered with another drive to tie the count for the last time, 34-all.
After that, the Red Cubs replied with decisive 6-2 spurt off baskets from Nelle, Tagala and Pedro Alfaro, moving the Red Cubs ahead, 40-36.
The Squires still managed to put up some resistance off Russell Dolendo’s drive and Tamayo’s freebies to tie the match, 40-all.

But that was the last time that the Squires were able to keep up with the Red Cubs.
In the next play, Nayve joined hands with Nelle for scorching 13-2 run.
This handed San Beda a 53-44 halftime lead, and a big advantage that was theirs for the rest of the game.

At the end of the day, the Red Cubs found themselves sharing the early lead with the Mapua Red Robins, the La Salle Greenhills Greenies, the Arellano University Braves and the Lyceum Junior Pirates.
Romuel Junsay shot 15 points to lead the undermanned Red Robins to an 86-64 smothering of the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers.
Troy Mallilin and Unique Naboa made 15 points for the LSGH Greenies, who stormed a 75-60 win over the San Sebastian College Staglets.
Lars Sunga fired 18 points for the Braves in their 105-88 tripping of the University of Perpetual Help Junior Altas.
Makki Santos drained 17 points in leading the Junior Pirates to an 85-66 swamping of EAC-ICA.
